What's the big deal about baptism?

What is the big deal about baptism? I actually have a few friends who have never been baptized… They’re fully devoted followers of Jesus, but they’re waiting for the perfect moment and the perfect location and to have the perfect group of family and friends around them… And they’ve been waiting for decades for the perfect scenario. If that’s you, why not say “HINENI” – The Hebrew word that means “God I’m ready and willing, no conditions, the answer is yes to your invitation and commandment to be baptized!”

Why can’t I just baptize myself in the hot tub in my backyard? Hmm... that would be a little weird and it would prevent us from being able to celebrate with you!

Why is baptism so central to what it means to be a follower of Jesus?
1. It is a sign of inclusion into the church family. It publicly announces to the world, ‘I am not ashamed to be a part of God’s family.’
2. It is an outward expression of an inward reality.
3. It is a cleansing from the guilt of sin and a fresh start.
4. It is an identification with the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Baptism is not an optional ritual to be delayed or postponed.

Have you been baptized? Jesus commanded this beautiful act for all in His family … In the New Testament, people were baptized as soon as they believed. At Pentecost, 3,000 people were baptized the same day they accepted Christ. Elsewhere, an Ethiopian leader was baptized on the spot when he opened his life to Jesus, and Paul and Silas baptized a Philippian jailer and his family at midnight.

If you haven’t been baptized as an expression of your faith in Christ, we invite you to take that next step of faith on Sunday, July 15 at Oceanhills Church on the Beach.

If you and your kids have decided to follow Christ why not be baptized together as a family unit with your children – Wow what a moment that could be for you & your family...

If you are ready to say “HINENI” to being baptized then please email us here at the church office, so we can huddle up with you and others to orient you on your next step.

See you this Sunday at The Luke for our 10am Sunday Celebration!

In it Together,
Dr Jon Ireland
